What happens to my notes if the company shuts down?

If your notes live on the company’s servers, you have until the service shuts down to export them, and then they are gone. If your notes live on your own device, the app keeps opening them after the company has gone — what matters next is whether you can get them out in a format another app reads.

Two things to check now

  • Where is the primary copy? A cloud-first app with an offline cache is not the same as an app that stores everything on your device.
  • What does the export produce? Plain Markdown or text files open anywhere. A proprietary format needs an importer on the other side.

How Prevon handles it

Prevon stores your vault on your device and needs no server to open it, so it does not depend on us staying in business to keep working. There is no account to be switched off.

Prevon’s export today is an encrypted vault snapshot, which opens in Prevon. A plain-text export is not something we can point to yet, and we would rather say so than imply one exists.

Getting notes in is easier: Prevon imports from seven sources, so leaving another app is one import. See every source.

Prevon is in private beta.
