Is Google Keep private?
Google Keep notes are private from other people unless you share them, but not from Google: Google does not describe Keep as end-to-end encrypted, so it can access your notes. Gemini features that work with Keep also send note content to Google’s servers.
What Google says
- Keep is not described as end-to-end encrypted anywhere in Google’s documentation, and its client-side encryption for Workspace does not list Keep.
- For personal Google accounts, Google’s Gemini privacy hub says a subset of Gemini chats are reviewed by people, and that Gemini activity may be used to improve Google’s services, including training generative AI models. Connecting Gemini to Keep requires Keep activity to be on.
- For Workspace (work and school) accounts, Google says your content is not reviewed by people or used to train generative AI models outside your organisation without permission.
What we could not verify
Google’s privacy policy says it does not show personalised ads based on content from Drive, Gmail or Google Photos. Keep is not named in that sentence, and we found no Google statement either way about Keep content and advertising. We are not going to guess.
If you want a notes app Google cannot read
Prevon encrypts every note on your device with a key made from your 12-word Recovery Seed, which we never see, and needs no account. Importing from Keep takes one Google Takeout export. Prevon is in a private beta and has not had an independent security audit. It is designed so that we cannot read your notes; until someone outside the company has checked that, “designed” is the accurate word.
Statements about other products are read from their own published documentation as of . If any of it is out of date, tell us and we will correct the page.
Prevon is in private beta.
