Why is there no “forgot password” button?
Because a “forgot password” button only works if the company can get to your data without your password — and Prevon is designed so that we cannot. Your notes are locked with a key made from your 12 words, we never see those words, so there is nothing we could reset.
Why a reset means a way in
When a service resets your password and your data is still there, the service either held your key or held a copy of your data it could read. Either way, a second way into your account exists. Anyone who can use it — staff, an attacker, a legal demand — can get to your notes.
Prevon keeps no second key, so there is no second way in, for anyone.
The cost, stated plainly
If you lose your 12 words and your device, nobody can get your notes back — including us. We cannot make an exception, because there is nothing to make it with.
How to avoid losing them
- Write the 12 words down on paper when you set up Prevon, and keep them somewhere safe from fire and water.
- Day to day, unlock with a PIN or your fingerprint or face. You only need the 12 words to set up a new device or after a reset.
- Do not store the 12 words in the vault they unlock.
Prevon is in private beta.
There is no public download yet. Leave an email and we write once, when it opens to everyone.
