Are Apple Notes end-to-end encrypted?

Only if you turn on Advanced Data Protection: by default, notes in iCloud are encrypted with keys Apple holds, so they are not end-to-end encrypted. With Advanced Data Protection on, iCloud Notes are end-to-end encrypted and only your trusted devices hold the keys.

The three cases

  • Standard data protection (the default): Notes are encrypted in transit and on Apple’s servers, with keys held by Apple.
  • Advanced Data Protection: Notes are end-to-end encrypted, with keys only on your trusted devices.
  • Locked notes: a note you lock with a password is end-to-end encrypted with a key derived from that password, even without Advanced Data Protection. Apple cannot recover a locked note if you forget the password.

Notes that never reach iCloud

Notes in the “On My iPhone” or “On My Mac” account stay on that device and are not synced to iCloud at all.

Where Prevon differs

Prevon encrypts every note on your device by default, with no setting to turn on, and works on Windows, Linux and Android as well as Apple devices. If you only use Apple devices, Apple Notes with Advanced Data Protection on is a strong option. Prevon vs Apple Notes.
