Import your Obsidian vault into Prevon

An Obsidian vault is already a folder of Markdown files, so there is nothing to export — point Prevon at the vault folder (or a zip of it) and it imports every note. Your folders, tags, frontmatter titles and dates come with them, and each note is encrypted on your device as it lands.

How to get your notes out

What Prevon reads: Your vault folder of .md files

  1. Find your vault folder on disk. In Obsidian, the vault switcher shows where each vault lives.
  2. Optionally zip the folder if you are moving it to another device first.
  3. In Prevon, choose Import, pick Obsidian, and select the folder or zip.

What comes across, and what doesn't

Comes across

  • Every .md note, with your folder structure re-created
  • Titles from a frontmatter `title:` field, otherwise the file name
  • Tags from frontmatter and inline #tags, merged without duplicates
  • Created and updated dates from frontmatter `date`, `created` and `updated` fields
  • Embedded files your notes reference, where the export includes them
  • Any other frontmatter fields, kept with the note

Stays behind

  • Obsidian plugins and their settings — they are part of Obsidian, not your notes
  • Canvas files and other non-Markdown formats; the report lists anything skipped

Keeping Obsidian alongside it

Obsidian does nothing to your files that stops you importing them, and Prevon never writes back into the vault. You can keep both while you decide; a second import picks up what changed.

If plain files you can open in any editor matter more to you than encryption at rest, Obsidian may be the better fit — see the comparison.

What happens after you point Prevon at it

The import reads your export on your device and encrypts each note there before it is stored. Nothing is uploaded, and the original export is left exactly as it was — the import reads files, it never edits or deletes them.

When it finishes you get a report: how many notes came in, which folders were re-created, and every file it skipped with the reason. Nothing is dropped silently.

Run the same import again later and it updates the notes that changed instead of creating duplicates, so you can keep using your old app while you decide.
